Poker’s been a passion of mine for years. It’s the perfect blend of mathematics, psychology & social dynamics. We play in a ‘house’ game and have for years – the age range spans from 75 to 35 – it’s a pretty diverse game & we play a whole lot more then just hold’em!
When I took my seat @ last week’s game, the guy next to me started off the conversation w/ “I just lost $50 on that hand. Bad beat!” I felt bad for the fella – that’s a substantial chunk to lose on one hand in our house game. But w/in seconds – another buddy chimed in “Don’t feel bad for him – he just won $60 the hand before!”
If I looked @ just the raw #’s, I would have thought he was in the negative for the night. When I took into account the % he lost relative to the percentage he just won, things looked incredibly different. Numbers LIE – percents don’t!
Since I don’t get paid to tell you about my poker games, I want to tie this back digital, direct & any other type of marketing/advertising. Don’t just look @ the raw #’s – they don’t tell you the whole story. Those raw #’s are simply the content of the story. Pay incredibly close attention to how those #’s relate to other #’s in terms of percentages. The percentages tell the context of the story. W/out context, the content is pretty irrelevant.
Metrics & analytics are the vast and can sometimes be confusing. Use percents wherever possible to help make mountains of data into usable verticals of knowledge!
